26-year-old arrested for murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO, faces multiple gun and forgery charges

Luigi Mangione, 26, has been arrested in connection with the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was fatally shot on December 4, 2024, near the company’s annual investor conference in Manhattan. Mangione faces several charges, including first-degree murder, criminal possession of a firearm, forgery, tampering with records, and providing false identification. He is currently held in Pennsylvania, awaiting extradition to New York for further legal proceedings.

According to the criminal complaint, Mangione’s arrest followed a series of criminal activities. These include forging documents, possessing an illegal firearm, and using false identification when interacting with law enforcement. Authorities have confirmed that Mangione fled New York after the shooting, making his way to Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was eventually apprehended. The arrest occurred after a McDonald’s employee recognized Mangione, leading to his identification and capture.

Investigators recovered a black 3D-printed handgun from Mangione, which was found to contain a loaded Glock magazine with six nine-millimeter rounds and one hollow-point round. The firearm, which included both 3D-printed plastic and metal components, was identified as a Chairmanwon V1, a model associated with homemade, untraceable guns. This discovery is part of an increasing concern over the use of such firearms in criminal activities.

Thompson was shot near the location of UnitedHealthcare’s conference. Surveillance footage shows Mangione waiting for Thompson before approaching him and firing a weapon in what appeared to be a targeted attack. Thompson, who was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. Authorities have confirmed that the attack was intentional but have not disclosed the motive behind the shooting.

After the incident, Mangione’s movements were tracked, and authorities determined that he had fled New York and traveled to Pennsylvania. Following his arrest, law enforcement officials have been working to piece together further details regarding his activities and any potential connections between Mangione and the victim.

UnitedHealth Group has acknowledged the swift action of law enforcement and stated that they are fully cooperating with investigators. The investigation is ongoing as officials continue to examine Mangione’s background and motivations for the crime. Authorities are also exploring the suspect’s use of untraceable firearms in light of the increasing concern over 3D-printed weapons.
